There are only a few large resorts with most accommodations being owned and operated by local landowners providing a dozen or so beach bungalows. There are also a growing number of luxury villas and private holiday homes for rent. The second most popular destination is the Lagoon island of Aitutaki about 45-minutes flight north of Rarotonga.. Here you'll find picturesque swimming beaches on the north west coast of Aitutaki make this the most popular place to stay. Stunning beaches on the Southern Tip of Aitutaki at Ootu Point looking across to the main island. Several small resorts line the narrow strip of beach with great views of the gorgeous offshore islands and sunsets over the lagoon. The main island of Aitutaki has a handful of accommodation including one small luxury resort and several affordable self catering beach bungalows which offer an even more laid back atmosphere than Rarotonga. View Our Cook Islands Resorts Directory Just three large hotels exist on Rarotonga, the largest having 202 rooms and only three levels high, making the Cook Islands a laid back non-commercial holiday destination. The Cook Islands has a handful of small luxury resorts accommodationg less than 30 couples. Most have a strict no child policy to ensure a secluded atmosphere. The Cook Islands has a handful of small exclusive boutique villas with prices starting from NZ$600 per night. A long established success story in Cook Islands tourism is the operation of affordable self catering beach bungalows owned and managed by local families. Small collections of beach bungalows offer the best value for money on Rarotonga and Aitutaki, many with self catering facilities and serviced rooms. There are a couple of small motel units along the coastal road of Rarotonga which offer self catering facilities. There are no bed and breakfast accommodations although several families have opened up their house for budget guests and some house are offered as longer stay holiday homes, ideal living for families or groups travelling together. |
